Yoga for Children with Special Needs and Learning Problems
Breath, Stretch, Shake, Let it go. Through Yoga, children learn skills to help with focus
and concentration. Yoga helps children who are hyperactive, self-stimulate as well as
children with high and low tone. Children learn to control their breath which helps them
control their emotions and react more functionally to unexpected triggers in their surroundings.
Children learn Mantras (repeated words or phrases) which facilitates speech and allows them to
express themselves with confidence.
Yoga is beneficial for both children with and without special needs. It helps children become
more aware of the mind/body connection and the power of positive thinking, while giving them
an escape from the stimuli of their everyday environment. Children also learn a variety of
Asanas (yoga poses) which assist them with proper body alignment, balance and strength.
Behavior Therapy
Behavior Therapy has proven effective in managing issues such as hyperactivity, self-injurious
behavior, ritualistic behaviors and repetitive behaviors as well as aggressive and disruptive
behaviors. Resolving these issues is critical for children's success at home and at school.
Behavior Therapy, including the use of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), is designed to teach
social, motor and verbal behaviors as well as reasoning skills to increase a child's success
in all environments.
Special Needs Awareness and Advocacy Program (S.N.A.A.P.)
S.N.A.A.P.'s awareness and advocacy activities provide guidance about the available services,
knowledge of accommodations and modifications and the specific rights within the community
and public school system afforded to children with disabilities. A part of S.N.A.A.P. is the
Testing and Evaluation Center. The center offers a complete battery of cognitive, developmental
and academic achievement evaluations. All are used to determine developmental levels as well as
cognitive/academic strengths and weaknesses. All the services are offered on a sliding scale so
all families can afford to help their children achieve their potential.
